“ShadowPlay”
self-released
Love the dark and gloomy cathedral ruins depicted on the cover. ShadowPlay take their cue from the band Leaves' Eyes, offering up a semi-gothic soundscape that really hits stride on 'Alone'. That being said, vocalist Alitia Atkins never belts it out, opting for a more delicate and sensitive approach.
Keyboardist Guy Lillico is intrinsic to the lush, flowing harmonies. At times he ventures too far into pop syth, as in 'The Awakening'. Fortunately heavy guitar soon kicks in to metal it up a bit. Then drummer Duane Bonney chimes in with lead vocals, stirring the pot even further. Ultimately though, the sound comes too mundane too quickly. Get doomier, get uglier, get faster - get out of the safety zone.
